Refrigerant R-404A

R-404A is a high-safety (A1), near-azeotropic HFC refrigerant blend originally developed as a retrofit replacement for R-502 and its subsequent alternatives, as well as for the most demanding R-22 applications. It is also widely used in new equipment. This versatile refrigerant covers refrigeration needs ranging from food preservation and freezing to industrial cooling processes. Due to its GWP above 2,500, its use is currently restricted in Europe.

R-404A has historically been one of the most widely used refrigerants in commercial and industrial refrigeration due to its ability to operate across a broad range of temperatures, from chilled storage to deep-freezing applications. Its stable performance and ease of integration into existing systems have made it a common choice for supermarkets, cold storage facilities, distribution centers and industrial refrigeration systems. It has also been extensively used in retrofit projects involving older refrigerants. However, evolving European environmental regulations have accelerated the transition toward lower-GWP alternatives, particularly in applications subject to regulatory restrictions.
