Refrigerant R-453A (RS-70 / RS-44B)

RS-70 (R-453A) is an HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) refrigerant developed as a direct replacement for R-22, with zero ozone depletion potential. It is recognized for its ease of retrofit and high operating efficiency. According to a study carried out by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), R-453A provides greater cooling capacity and improved performance compared with R-417A, R-422D and R-434A.
With a GWP of 1,765, it is not affected by the restrictions introduced under Regulation (EU) No. 517/2014 (F-Gas), which since January 2020 applies to refrigerants with a GWP of 2,500 or higher.
R-453A is not recommended as a direct replacement for R-22 in flooded systems.

RS-70 has been developed to simplify the replacement of R-22 across a wide range of refrigeration and air conditioning applications, offering a balanced combination of cooling capacity, energy efficiency and ease of implementation. Its use helps reduce the impact of regulatory restrictions associated with high-GWP refrigerants while maintaining competitive performance in existing systems. Thanks to its operating characteristics, it can provide performance improvements over certain retrofit refrigerants historically used in the market. It is particularly suitable for modernization projects seeking to maximize service continuity while minimizing modifications to the original equipment.
