Success in the execution of the project Purification of Hydrogen from synthesis gas from solid waste (HyCO2H2)

Èxit en l’execució del projecte Purificació d’Hidrogen de gas de síntesi provinent de residus sòlids (HyCO2H2)

Over the past two years, the GRIT R&D team has been carrying out a project that has allowed the development of an innovative technology for the separation of Hydrogen and CO2. The project has focused on the purification of synthesis gas from solid waste gasification plants, taking advantage of the energy required for the reforming and gasification process to improve overall energy efficiency. Through this project, GRIT aspires to contribute significantly to the mitigation of environmental problems associated with Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, also promoting a more sustainable circular economy model supported using renewable energies.

The project, which was carried out internally at our Avinyó facilities, has a budget of €754,358.00 for which it has received €641,204.30 from the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), which has earned it co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). This financial support aims to promote technological progress, innovation and quality research through the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, thus recognizing the potential of this project as a catalytic agent for technological progress in Spain.

At the end of the project, it can be said that the separation of hydrogen from solid waste gasification streams has been optimized through the combination of adsorption and membrane separation technologies. H₂ recovery of up to 98% and purities of up to 99% have been achieved. The project also considered CO₂ capture technologies to minimize process emissions. In this regard, a comparative study was carried out between low-pressure adsorption with two stages and high-pressure adsorption, achieving an optimization of the energy cost to only 0.58 KW/(Kg CO2).

The success of this project consolidates GRIT as a leader in the development of innovative and environmentally responsible technologies.
